Rithmic and Tradovate are the two most common execution infrastructures for futures prop firm traders. Almost every listed firm supports at least one; many support both. The right pick depends on how you want to trade, not on which is 'better'.
Rithmic: the pro layer
Rithmic is infrastructure, it's what other platforms (Quantower, NinjaTrader, Sierra Chart, R|Trader) connect to for market data and order routing. If you use any desktop futures platform with a serious order-book tool, it's likely running on Rithmic under the hood.
- Desktop-first. No browser front-end from Rithmic itself.
- Lowest-latency path for most retail futures traders.
- Requires a third-party platform on top (Quantower, NinjaTrader, Sierra) for charting.
- Data subscription usually sold separately from the platform and the prop firm.
Tradovate: the browser-first layer
Tradovate is a browser-native futures platform that includes charting, order entry, and a mobile app. It's the easiest on-ramp for new futures traders, no installation, no data subscription to wire up separately, works on any OS including Chromebook.
- Browser and mobile. No Windows/Mac dependency.
- Data included in most prop firm packages that support Tradovate.
- Order book and DOM are good, not as deep as Sierra/Quantower for tape readers.
- Lower setup friction for beginners.
Which to pick
If you're starting out or want to trade from anywhere without a dedicated trading PC, Tradovate. If you're a scalper, tape reader, or algorithmic trader who needs the lowest latency and the deepest order book, Rithmic with Quantower or Sierra Chart. Many traders use Tradovate for mobile monitoring and Rithmic for the main trading session.
Firm support matters too
Some firms support Tradovate only on certain account sizes or tiers. Always verify that the platform you want is included in the evaluation you're buying, not just in the firm's platform list generally.
